"Darkness. We hear the sound of a woman moaning as she regains consciousness. As she opens her eyes, there is a bright, afternoon garden sunlight. Throughout the play, we hear what she hears; see what she sees. A subjective viewpoint, therefore, and one that may at times be somewhat less than accurate."
The comic poet of middle class life goes deeper and darker in this play about a housewife named Susan who is married to a boring cleric. After getting knocked out by stepping on the tooth end of a garden rake, Susan experiences hilarious hallucinations in which her oppressive and boring everyday life is replaced by a fantasy in which she is the ideal wife and mother with an ideal family.
