"'Rumors' sets in motion a cascade of laughs"
Imagine receiving an invitation from your best friends to attend their tenth wedding anniversary party at their home. You drive up to the residence on the night of the party and as you get out of the car you hear a gunshot. Rushing into the house you realize that only the host is home, there are no servants, no wife, and none of the other guests have arrived. What should you do?
Rumors is one of Neil Simon’s best comedies, filled with delightful characters and snappy dialogue. The time is early 1990s. Several affluent couples gather in a posh suburban residence for a dinner party. When they arrive, they discover there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host—the deputy mayor of New York City—has shot himself through the earlobe. Comic complications arise when they decide they need to conceal the evening’s events from the local police and the media. You don’t need to know much more than that, except hang on for the ride!
Director Chris Pinto, who directed last year’s hit comedies Funny Money and On the Razzle, has a wonderful cast of comedic actors: Jennifer Sellers and Bill Campbell play Ernie & Cookie Cusack; Nancy Boyett and Paul Rhoden play Claire & Lenny Ganz; Scott Shirk and Leela Gouveia play Glenn & Cassie Cooper; Michael Walker and Leslie Murray play Chris & Ken Gorman; and Chris McVay and Cindy Solari play the two police officers.
