The Very Little Theatre will hold open auditions for Breath of Spring, the hilarious comedy by Peter Coke, at The VLT, 2350 Hilyard St in Eugene, Saturday, June 2 at 1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to audition at The Very Little Theatre.

Auditions will be cold readings from the script; no prepared monologues or memorized scenes are required. Be prepared to audition using a British accent. Eight roles are available for five women and three men:

• Dame Beatrice (age 50-70): Energetic, a bit eccentric. She rents the flat and sublets to lodgers.

• Brigadier Albert Rayne (age 50-70): Retired military, precise, strict, a lodger.

• Miss Nanette Parry (age 50-70): Vocal coach, odd, strong personality, another lodger.

• Miss Elizabeth Hatfield (age 50-70): Repairs china, timid and emotional, another lodger.

• Lady Alice Miller (age 50-70): Dame ‘Bee’s’ best friend, sardonic, still a beauty.

• Lily Thompson (age 25-35): Dame ‘Bee’s’ maid, lower class accent, spunky.

• Detective Sergeant Pape (age 25-35): From Scotland Yard, lower class accent, acts more sure of himself than he is.

• Police Constable Kemp (age 25-35): Non-speaking role, Pape’s sidekick.

Rehearsals will begin June 11. The play opens July 27, 2012 with ten performances scheduled during a three-week run from July 27 to August 11.

Background on the Play:

A hilarious comedy! When Dame Beatrice is given a mink stole by her maid, Lily, she suspects it was stolen. To protect Lily, she and her “middle-aged” lodgers devise a plan to return the stole without being caught. The operation is so exhilarating they decide to continue the fun by stealing furs themselves and distributing the profits to charity. All goes well until Scotland Yard calls! The laughs build as they try to scheme their way out of being discovered.
